group_pm_webWe recently co-presented a concert at Rideau Hall with Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston.  Called Young Artists Inspired by Glenn Gould, the evening's programme was a thrilling musical experience paying tribute to works that Gould performed or arranged.  The Foundation presented the concert both to honour and demonstrate Gould's international impact and to highlight and advance the careers of exceptional emerging musicians.

The concert began with opening remarks from His Excellency who stated, "The youth here today are wonderful examples of what happens when we devote time, attention and resources to education.  They have learned from masters in music and have succeeded because of their ambition and their commitment."  Brian Levine, Executive Director (GGF) spoke about the work of the Foundation to the distinguished audience and thanked the performers for making the long journey to Ottawa for this special event.  Master of Ceremonies, Andrew Craig of CBC Radio 2 then took to the stage, presenting the artists with flare.

The eight performers and our staff were also honoured with the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Harper earlier that day, receiving a warm welcome in his Parliamentary office.  The Prime Minister accepted our gifts including Glenn Gould books and music and a Venezuelan condecoración from Glenn Gould Prize Laureate, Dr. José Antonio Abreu, presented by eleven-year-old El Sistema cellist, Miguel Ángel Cegarra.  Prime Minister Harper also shared his experiences as a young piano student and how music positively impacted his early life.

“I found that it was an amazing experience performing at Rideau Hall in front of Their Excellencies the Governor General and Mrs. Johnston.  I feel as if it was a very big and important music event and this inspired me to play my very best. I also really enjoyed meeting the Prime Minister. This was all a huge and great experience for me!”   - William Franklyn Leathers, age 9

Once again, we would like to thank Aeroplan Canada for their tremendous support for this event, providing all airfare and accommodations for the performing musicians.  Thank you also to Yamaha Music Canada Ltd., Ottawa Pianos and Mr. Andrew Craig.
