High School Tours and Performances

The Percussion Ensemble at Sir John A MacDonald High School

Members of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra toured nine local high schools in Toronto, where they performed with students, shared their experiences and introduced Ontario youth to the life transforming and visionary concepts behind El Sistema.

"The performance was fantastic. Afterwards, I was surprised at the number of questions that the kids asked but they were clearly enthralled." - Parent

"The performance was mesmerizing. These young performers were, in many ways, equal to or better than many professional groups I have heard." - Organizer

"It brought the community together and various schools together from the neighbourhood. We felt special to host this enemble." - Student

Regent Park School of Music Choir with the Millennium String Quartet

Later that same day, members of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra then visited five of Toronto's community agencies that provide music education as part of their mandate. The musicians performed, shared their experiences and talked about what El Sistema has meant to them to students, parents and community neighbours at Dixon Hall, SKETCH, Regent Park School of Music, Miles Nadal JCC and University Settlement.

"It was great to have a public choir performance where parents and siblings were able to be the audience. Also, once the Millennium Quartet started playing, everyone was so amazed! The Q&A session was great, people were really into it." - Regent Park School of Music

"After the quartet had finished playing, they participated in some community art-making as part of our regular programming. Everyone working together on a piece, and communicating with the artists, was quite wonderful." - SKETCH
