Glenn Gould Goes to Havana

2017 marks the 150th birthday of Canada, but also a host of major Glenn Gould milestones, including the 85th anniversary of his birth. The Glenn Gould Foundation is taking the lead in promoting and encouraging musical and artistic events around the world to celebrate this globally beloved Canadian icon. We’re delighted to announce the first of these events.

Schola Cantorum Coralina is a mixed choir based in Havana, Cuba whose repertoire extends from the music of Renaissance music to the sounds of today, including Latin popular dance forms and Afro beats. Schola Cantorum’s Artistic Director and conductor Alina  Orraca believes that all music is part of a great continuum of human experience, and that different styles and genres can work together, just as the people of this world must. They have performed across North America and Europe and were honoured to have been selected to perform at the mass officiated by the late Pope John Paul II when he visited Cuba, and were subsequently invited to perform at the Vatican. The choir also were chosen to perform the Mass for Pope John Paul II at the Cathedral of Havana after his death. Coralina performed for the two others Pope's visits to Cuba: Pope Benedict and Francisco.

Schola Cantorum Coralina's children's choir have performed in Canada (World Choral Festival Lotto-Quebec), and believe that their music can be a wonderful expression of the long-standing and harmonious relations between our peoples. Coralina singers are great admirers of Canada's cultural contributions, and particularly of the great Canadian pianist Glenn Gould, who has had such a profound influence on the musical life of the world, an influence that continues to this day. For this reason, the Artistic Director, Alina Orraca has created a series of three concerts for Coralina to pay tribute in music both to Canada on its 150th birthday and to Glenn Gould on the 85th anniversary of his birth.

The first concert takes place on April 22, 2017 at the historic church of San Francisco de Paula in Old Havana and will include a program of music loved by, associated with and by Glenn Gould. The Glenn Gould Foundation is pleased to have assisted Schola Cantorum Coralina in the creation of this beautiful and historic tribute to the musical legacy of Glenn Gould and to Canada 150.
