Eleventh Glenn Gould Prize Celebrations

For the Eleventh Glenn Gould Prize celebrations in Canada’s national capital, The Glenn Gould Foundation mounted a wide-ranging array of extraordinary cultural events dubbed “The Grand Tour.” The Tour provided a unique complement to the Prize gala concert and award ceremony, exploring the many ways in which arts and culture inform, enliven and illuminate the public realm, touching all aspects of society, confronting vital social issues, and enriching our most significant public institutions.

Joan Chalmers (1928 – 2016)

One of Canada’s greatest and most dedicated arts philanthropists, Joan supported hundreds of creative individuals and organizations, including The Glenn Gould Foundation.

Joan was responsible for the establishment of the Ontario Crafts Council and Canadian Crafts Council, and serviced on many boards, including the Stratford Festival and the Ontario Arts Council Foundation, as well as supporting the Harbourfront Centre and Young People’s Theatre.

Russell Oberlin (1928 – 2016)

The Glenn Gould Foundation is saddened to learn of the loss of Russell Oberlin, who passed away at the age of 88. Russell was a gifted musician, part of the revival of the countertenor (male alto) vocal tradition that coincided with the Early Music and authentic performance practice movements in the second half of the twentieth century. He had unprecedented success in the United States, becoming the first prominent countertenor in American history.

Leonard Cohen 1934 – 2016

Today all of us at The Glenn Gould Foundation are grieving at the news of Leonard Cohen’s death at the age of 82. Leonard enriched the world with the music of his words, the depth of his insight into the human soul, and the combination of passion, romanticism, irony and lyricism that infused his song and verse.
